Speed, stamina and incredible excitement, Republican Party’s win in the Listed Sires Stakes Sophomore Classic had it all.

The three-year-old showed sheer brilliance to brush off a thrilling early battle for the lead with ease, going on to score a big win that had everyone at Ashburton on Monday talking.

It was clear from the moment the gate left that driver Blair Orange wanted the lead with Republican Party.

After a sizzling opening 400m battle with Franco Mac and Natalie Rasmussen he won out, though there was plenty of chatter on course suggesting the pair had burnt too hard.

But as he has done so many times before in the Cran and Chrissie Dalgety colours, Blair had judged the race to perfection.

“It was probably an unusual feeling more than anything, we are not used to seeing Blair getting into a battle like that,” Cran said.

“It did cross my mind that he may have burnt a few more chips than he liked.”

“But the reason we put Blair on is because he is the best.”

“He has full faith in this horse, he doesn’t overstate it but we know he loves this guy.”

“Together with how highly we think of him, we came around the corner with plenty of confidence.”

“It was a very strong win by a good horse and both horse and driver made a statement today.”

It wasn’t just speed and stamina that helped Republican Party beat out a smart field.

His racing manners played a vital role.

“He has a great attitude and is very switched on in the top two inches,” Cran said.

“He can fire out of the gate like that and then relax in front when asked to.”

“He doesn’t carry on charging along like other horses do.”

“Certainly being very adaptable is a major strength in any race, but when you are racing the high-class horses it is definitely important.

Republican Party is highly likely to be seen at the upcoming New Zealand Cup Carnival but which race he takes on is yet to be decided.

“We will be trying to place him as best we can given he has a high rating.”

“The Junior Free-For-All is an option and there are other races, too.”

“We will monitor his recovery, but also work in with our plans for the New Zealand Derby.”

If his post-race antics are anything to guy by, then Republican Party was feeling extra well following his Sires Stakes Sophomore win.

The three-year-old greeted co-owner Margaret Creighton with a bite on the arm of her jacket after his race, leaving a decent hole.

But judging by the thrill she got from the horse’s win, she didn’t look too fazed about it.
