Cran took a punt on Lot 56 at the National Yearling Sales and he is already glad he did.

The Downbytheseaside colt from Jakira was picked up by Kentuckiana Lodge for the bargain price of $15,000.

The colt’s pedigree features a double up of Somebeachsomewhere with both his sire Downbytheseaside and his dam Jakira by the siring great.

The match up has worked well on type with Lot 56 a strong, athletic and upstanding looking colt.

“He certainly caught the eye and I spent quite a bit of time going over him,” Cran said.

“I actually took him for a walk around just to get a bit of a look into his temperament.”

“I really couldn’t fault the horse.”

“Overall, he is just a cracking type, he’s got a great constitution and he is very strong and muscular.”

“He is very well put together and he has that real Somebeach head on him – we just don’t know if he got it from the dam or the sire.”

“With his pedigree being a little bit unusual we went over him with a fine tooth comb –probably more than any other horse in the sale and he passed muster.”

“When he was going at such a reasonable price I was more than happy to put the hand up.” “And now that we have got him home the price is looking like a bit of a bargain.”

The Kentuckiana Lodge team have Lot 56 in the early stages of his breaking in prep and so far he is doing everything right.

“With the Somebeach factor you would expect him to be a little hot and have a bit of attitude about him,” Cran said.

“But that hasn’t been the case, he’s been a dream so far and hopefully that continues.”

“He wants to be with you and he is learning quickly so he is ticking all boxes.”

“He will get gaited up once he learns the ropes a bit more but being so clean in the legs and having that good confirmation we are hopeful he will handle that all in his stride too.”

“All in all, we wouldn’t send him back and if we had to buy him again, we would be happy to pay a bit more.”

“We love him.”

Lot 56’s dam Jakira was trained at Kentuckiana Lodge in the early stages of her career and she won races before moving on to the North Island.

“She had a bit of speed about her and probably went a little bit better than her record might suggest.”

“In saying that she won four races and did a handy job.”

“We were more than comfortable to have a crack with one of her foals given what we knew about her.”

Some shares still remain available in Lot 56 and at his bargain price the colt represents an outstanding opportunity to race a horse at an affordable buy-in price.
