The chance to contest New Zealand’s rich two-year-old features was just one of the reasons Cran Dalgety put his hand up to purchase Lot 301 at the National Yearling Sales.

In the first in a series of articles focusing on Kentuckiana Lodge’s yearling draft, we zero in on the Captain Crunch – Kensington Kate colt.

Given Cran went to $125,000 to secure the colt, it should be no surprise that he ticked all boxes in terms of type, conformation and pedigree.

The Kensington Kate colt also had the look of an early-running type which gave Cran even more motivation to secure him.

“He certainly has that early running look about him,” Cran said.

“He’s that perfect size to get up and going.”

“He looks to have the right make up to make a two-year-old and he has a great constitution as well which suggests he would thrive on an advanced workload in his early stages.”

Cran puts the yearling’s two-year-old look down to him throwing to his dam sire, Bettor’s Delight.

“Through his head and his constitution through his body, he is a real Bettor’s Delight type.”

“That is obviously going to stand him in pretty good stead.”

“On his sire’s side, he’s by Captain Crunch and he is leaving some impressive types who were very well sought-after at the sales.”

“All in all he has the page and he has the looks and that’s why we went after him.”

Lot 301’s dam Kensington Kate is the dam of a two-year-old by Sweet Lou as well as a Captaintreacherous foal from this spring.

Kensington Kate was a consistent performer for the Robert Dunn stable.

The mare is from the outstanding producer Hyde Park Royal who has left 10 winners.

Among them is five-time Group One winner Piccadilly Princess, who is a full sister to Kensington Kate.

“It has been a great family with a very good strike rate in terms of foals to winners,” Cran said.

“The grand-dam has left some very good horses with Piccadilly Princess obviously being the best of them.”

“Crossing the Captaintreacherous line over a Bettor’s Delight mare has been successful with Millwood Nike bred on that cross.”

“All in all, the pedigree page for this guy was very strong and it gave us the confidence to go after him.”

“And once we saw him it really sealed the deal.”

Several Kentuckiana Lodge clients have jumped at the chance to take a share in Lot 301.

But a limited number of shares remain available in the colt.
